Some people say the evolution of kayak fishing started in 2001 with the Hobie Mirage Outback. I would definitely recommend. We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. I already have some pretty good scars on the keel.Įven that being said I still think this kayak deserves 5 stars. She weighs about 80 lbs and we still moved easily around. Plenty of room, I paddled, she fished and she even caught fish. I took my grand daughter with me on one trip and she sat on a padded milk crate in front of me. (Looking forward to the new ones that are to follow.) Your not going to turn on a dime but they work well in the wind and on long paddles. The tackle box storage works great (4) 360 boxes and the storage pod WOW! Tracks great with very good glide forward and backward, Rudder pedals work well. I purchased the Storage Pod and would recommend this option to anyone that is not setting up for Pedal Drive. Sonar Pod isn't really needed for storage, but I'm looking forward to adding a fish finder. Pros MANY - Very Stable, Seat is very comfortable, Pull out tray under the seat is awesome no searching for pliers, phone, scissors, etc. (3) Gravity rudder doesn't deploy, I have to use my paddle to get it to drop. (2) Cooler storage area is fairly spongy when pushed down on, I would want to use it as a step getting into the kayak. (3) Cons - (1) Keel Guard isn't tall enough to protect the keel, it is actually below the keel of the kayak. My view is a little skewed because I have fished the last 4 years out of a Sun Dolphin 10ss. Ok, I have had my new Shearwater 7 full days and have fished out of it 4 times with each trip not being less than three hours. I find myself putting my rods there more than I do in the rod holders besides when Im trying to paddle. I love the rod grooves on the side of the chair that allow me to put the rods down if im going into wooded areas or anywhere that I have a potential of snagging my rods into places. The amount of space it has is great for my use and I know it has the potential to carry 8 rods but the max I carry is 3. Overall I am really happy with the kayak and its performance. Havent tested it out with a bigger ruder yet but that is what I have experienced so far. The rudder feels a bit too slim and does not allow for some sharper turns or going at low speeds. The lines are not tight and pop out all the time and cause the lines to loosen up and limit the rudder control. I have had a few minor issues with the kayak and they were mainly with the steering lines that are ran through the hull of the kayak. Mine has been upgraded with the Xdrive Pod and the pedal system from Vibe and I have been enjoying every bit of it. The kayak tracks well and is pretty easy to maneuver. I am 6'4" and 215lbs and have stood up in the kayak without any problems. I love the stability of the kayak and have never worried about flipping it. I have had my kayak for almost a year now and have logged quite a bit of trips on it so far.
